Koira Throw Blanket (and Giveaway!)

If you follow this blog on Facebook, you may have seen a picture of Koira laying on a giant Koira face. Well, that giant Koira face is actually my new throw blanket from Vision Bedding. I've been drooling over custom throw blankets for ages, really wanting one, but not wanting to pay the prices. Blankets to me are all about feel, and I can't feel something on the internet. And in my house, how hair-magnetic a fabric is ends up mattering a lot when it comes to how often something actually gets used.

Well, I've had my new Vision Bedding throw blanket (I chose the Vision Select Photo Blanket 50x60) for a bit over a week now to completely test it out, and I have to say, I pretty much love it. The photo I chose to use was from a hike I took up to Drift Creek Falls on the coast last fall.

I wasn't sure how the photo would turn out printed large on a blanket, especially a fuzzy kind of blanket like fleece. Well, it turned out amazing. The throw blanket has two sides, with the picture on the top and then backed with a different fabric. The top fabric with the picture on it is super soft and kind of smooth like a high quality performance fleece. The photo printed on it great. The colors printed true to life, the picture is just as I submitted it to the company, and I really have no complaints at all about it. The smoothness of the top fabric even means that while of course it can get some dog and cat hair on it, the hair doesn't stick, and it doesn't end up nasty looking even with a white cat sleeping on top of it for a week.

I chose burgundy for the backing fabric color. I liked how it played off the earth tones in the photo I chose for the front. I was a little nervous that it would be too red but it turned out really nice. The backing fabric is more plush and less smooth than the top fabric. When I first unwrapped it, my immediate thought was that the backing fabric would attract pet hair like crazy. But I'm happy to say I was wrong. While the hair sticks a little more than to the top fabric, the burgundy backing still isn't a hair magnet, and the hair is easy to shake off or get off with a sticky roller. I do take the precaution of folding the blanket with the picture side out when I'm not using it so if the cats decide to sleep on it, they sleep on the side less likely to get hair stuck to it. This also has the benefit of being able to see at least part of the photo while the blanket is folded up.

Now, I will say that I had a couple of minor things while ordering the blanket. Vision Bedding just switched to a new online ordering system and I did encounter a few bugs. The main one was that while my house number appeared for ordering, the street number didn't show up in the shipping address even after I went in and changed it (they sent me an email telling me of the issue). When I was contacted again saying the address was faulty, I replied saying I had fixed it in their system. I was told it was likely a bug or glitch with their new system, and they just had me email the full address. The blanket arrived just fine at that point, with pretty fast shipping. While no one enjoys having problems ordering something, I was pleased with how well and quickly it was handled, and I wouldn't hesitate to order with them again. I feel like having that small problem gave me a chance to work with their customer service (who I don't believe were aware I was reviewing this product publicly).

Fit Friday: West Paw Zogoflex Air Dash and Glycoflex Plus Giveaway Winner

This month, I had the pleasure of reviewing the West Paw Zogoflex Air Dash frisbee toy for Chewy.com.

West Paw is an American company based in Montana who concentrates on making high quality, safe, and durable toys for dogs. The Zogoflex Air Dash is basically a frisbee made out of the Zogoflex material used in many of the West Paw toys.

The Air Dash is a bit on the heavier side, which takes a bit to adjust to when you first throw it. But it isn't so heavy as to be hard to throw or overly awkward.

Were Pallo a bit more talented, and the human a bit better at throwing, I am sure that some good air catches could be done with this disc. It isn't what I would use for doing freestyle disc competitions or anything, just due to the weight. But, I think it makes a great all-around play toy for most dogs.

In addition to your normal tosses in a field, the Air Dash floats, so you can use it in the water too.

The wavy build of this disc is something I really like. On land, it allows the dog to pick it up when it lands right side up without having to scratch and paw at it like with a normal disc. It also makes it more visible in the air, which I think would make it easier for a dog to see for a mid-air catch.

In water, the wavy design means that the disc floats a little higher in some places, making it easier for a dog swimming to spot it.

With a little practice, it is easy to get this disc to go where you want it, which makes me think it would be a good toy for dock diving, especially for those humans who have trouble throwing other toys very far, since as a disk it naturally goes farther than different types of toys.

Overall, I was a big fan of the Air Dash. Even after a full session of play, it had not a single mark from teeth.

And, Pallo really seemed to enjoy playing with it. He happy retrieved it both on land and in the water, and I think he had a really good time.

I'd certainly consider purchasing one of these in the future if this one were to get lost, or get a second one for Koira. I would probably go for the Currant color for Koira, though. The Dandelion color (which is here) matches Pallo's lifejacket, and the Currant would match Koira's lifejacket. There is also a third color option, Peacock, if you don't like the Dandelion or Currant. 

And then, what you've all been waiting for: The winner of the Glycoflex Plus giveaway I posted last Friday is Steve McComb, whose two dogs Chaos and Navy could both use a new supplement after a hip surgery on Chaos a few years ago, and Navy with four knee surgeries. I hope they enjoy!

Fit Friday: Tournament Wrap-Up and Glycoflex Plus Giveaway

The tournament this past weekend was great. We headed up to Ridgefield, WA for the weekend, staying at a Motel 6 (yay to no pet limits or pet fees) a little bit north in a cute little town. I shared a hotel room with a teammate, which was fun and saved us both some money, which is always great.

My team, Animal House, has a sort of reciprocal relationship with the host club for this weekend, Stumptown. Basically, they own mats for about one ring of the tournament, and we own mats for one ring, so we borrow the mats from the other club in order to have a two ring tournament, and we also send people to help them set up, and they send people to help us set up at our tournament. It is a great arrangement, as it makes things that much easier for both clubs. I went up on Friday (leaving late due to Pallo's seizure the night before, arranging vet visit for this week, picking up meds for Koira, and having a flat tire on the car) to help with set up. You have no idea how much work goes into a tournament until you are part of it.

It was all worth it, though. The tournament, as I said, was pretty great. One of the things I am the most happy with is Koira's performance.

I made sure that Koira got a nice long warm up and a bit of active stretching before every single race. She got to go out to potty, giving her a bit of trotting and movement. We did stretches to each side, bows, sit pretties, waves, and some low tugging, all of which helps get her limber and warm and ready to go. We also made sure to use her Back on Track jacket, which is basically a ceramic infused fabric that is supposed to help keep muscles warm and prevent cramping. Race horses use these jackets, and a lot of the top sport dogs do as well. I don't know that it is any more effective than any other lightweight jacket with the same coverage would be, but since I have it, I use it. I do like how well it covers, with it really getting down to the elbows, down over the hips and butt, and up the neck and down over the chest and belly. This jacket went on as soon as we finished our cool down walk after a race when Koira went back into her crate, and came off right before we went into the ring.

For our warm ups in the ring, I did the drill I've been doing with Koira, where someone else releases her and I reward her right after her box turn up close. The whole point is to increase her confidence and drive to the box. I couldn't have done it without the help of my own team and the help of other teams as well, especially Stumptown and Fierce Flyers, whose people stepped in when asked and helped out with releasing Koira when my own team didn't have extra people. There is something awesome about a team sport where not only does your own team help support you, but where every person on every team in the region will step up and help when needed. It is something I love about this sport for sure.

But, long story short, Koira rocked it this weekend. She started in all of her races (4 races on Saturday, 5 on Sunday, 4/4 heats both days). My start times weren't amazing, but with the exception of one absurdly early start, we did pretty good. My best start was 0.009 in the first heat of the first race on Sunday. Koira's times back in June and July weren't great- 6.0-6.5 seconds for almost every run. So imagine my happy surprise when she was putting in her previous times of 5.0-5.3 on average, with only a few heats slower, even on Sunday afternoon. She was double striding on the way to the box most of the time, but doing it fast. I hope with more work and longer on the Glycoflex Plus she will go back to single striding the jumps.

Something else that just helped keep the mood up and the energy there all weekend was having Wyatt, one of the founding dogs on Animal House, get his 30k point title, FDGCh, in the first race on Sunday morning. He is such a great dog, and his owner Patty is the "fearless leader" (as I call her to her amusement sometimes) of Animal House. So being part of Wyatt getting such a high title and high achievement really put some jazz into everyone on the team this weekend.

Team celebration and congratulations after the title heat was completed correcting and in time. It had to be a quick celebration so they could get back to the race, but it was joyous all the same.

So all in all, it was a really great weekend for everyone.

But I am pretty sold on this supplement being a big help.

Tasty Tuesday: Dogsters Ice Cream Treats for Dogs

This summer has been blazing hot and horribly dry. The weather has brought everything from horrible disasters like the terrible wildfires spreading across Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska to the small discomforts of hot dogs and no air conditioning to cool off.

We've been using our pool and the river to cool down. When Dogster's asked if we would be interested in trying out some of their ice cream for dogs, and hosting a giveaway for our fans, we jumped on it. Anything to help stay cool, right?

Dogsters comes in two different flavors, Nutly Peanut Butter and Cheese, and Mintë Kissably Fresh. They are made in the USA and have eight ingredients each, by my count. An interesting and awesome thing about their packaging is that they also have a braille accessible label for the visually impaired. It isn't something that I need, but I can really appreciate a company taking an extra step to make their product more easily accessible.

These remind me of those little ice cream cups they gave you at school, with the wooden stick to use as a spoon.

Also, since this is a frozen item that you purchase already frozen, it is awesome that they are available alongside the frozen novelties in grocery stores across the country. Which makes it easy to run to the store for some ice cream for the humans, and a frozen treat for the dogs, all at once.

Delicious. 

And my dogs were fans. It took a tiny bit of encouragement when I told them to take it, I think because as a frozen item it doesn't have a super strong smell, but once they took a first lick, both of my dogs loved it. Pallo kept trying to steal the whole thing from me because he thought he could enjoy it better on his own.

I did end up sending him outside with it to enjoy, and he licked the entire container clean without trying to eat the container. If you have dogs who might be prone to eating non-food items like the container these come in, I'd just pop it out and into a dish for them, though it might not last as long since they could pick it up and chomp instead of just licking.

Both Koira and Pallo tried these. Koira tried the mint flavor, and Pallo tried the peanut butter. I didn't smell these things at all until I stuck my nose right down on top of them, which makes it a nice treat to give your dogs if you have a sensitive nose.

Tasty Tuesday: Review and Giveaway

Paw Street Barkery was awesome enough to offer to have Koira and Pallo sample some of their products and share our thoughts here on the blog. We checked out their website and decided there was no way to pass up that offer.

We were sent three different treats to review. One of the treats we chose is a specialty that requires special shipping over the summer due to the heat- in October, however, the temperature starts being cool enough for them to ship through regular channels until the summer heat comes back again the following year. So what is this special treat? A peanut butter cup, of course!

I may or may not have sampled this one before taking a photo. But no one could prove those are my teeth marks on it...

In the box, these peanut butter cups are absolutely adorable. They look just like a Reese's peanut butter cup made by a fancy candy place. Which is basically what they are, really, only these ones are made with carob instead of chocolate in order to be dog friendly. And while I know a number of people who don't care for carob, I actually like it quite a bit. And the dogs love it.

The longer you make him wait, the bigger his eyes get, and the more he drools. There was seriously a drool puddle where he was laying after we were done.

Koira just gets super stoic. Like she won't break, no matter what type of torture you use.

I did make the dogs wait long enough for a photo, but then I released them to eat their gourmet treats. This is why I loosened the wrappers before the photo, so I could release them straight to their reward after their stay.

Koira took a few licks of carob off the top before picking up the entire cup and it went down the hatch.

Pallo just went in, mouth wide, all at once. 

I think you could say that these were a big hit with the pups. Fancy and decadent, for sure. I think they would be perfect for any pup who is going to spend a long night trick-or-treating for Halloween this year, or as an awesome stocking stuffer. But the carob does melt easily, so they are best stored in a cool place until they are served.

Paw Street also sent us two more treats to review. While not so over the top fancy as the peanut butter cups, both of these treats were a big hit with the dog as well.

The blueberry bone-anza treats smelled amazing, both to me and the dogs. They may not look like much in the package, but they really don't have to. Of course, the Chicken Bow-Wow treats were received very well too! I wouldn't be able to say which ones the dogs liked more, actually, though I loved the blueberry ones for the smell.

Big Head, Little Arms

Anyone seen the movie Meet the Robinsons? Remember this part?





That's what I keep thinking of. You know why? Because I went out and adopted myself a Munchkin.

That's right, the household has grown by one. For those unfamiliar with cat breeds, a Munchkin is basically a dwarfed cat- a full size cat with abnormally short legs. Like, the corgi of the cat world. Now, my little guy isn't a purebred Munchkin. He may be related to one, or he may simply be a random cat with a genetic mutation causing dwarfism. But, his short little legs are pretty darn adorable.

I don't think he has quite as short of legs as a standard show cat would have. But they are shorter than a normal tabby cat should have.  And he has these gorgeous orangey green eyes.

At six months old, he is probably going to still get larger (though his legs are probably not going to grow more). He is cuddly, but happy to play alone, and non demanding. He is playful, but careful with his claws. He isn't afraid of the dogs, though he will tell them to back off if they get a little too enthusiastic (Koira). Pallo is actually afraid of him for the most part. I'm sure they will become good buddies though. Koira is fascinated  and spends a lot of time just laying down, watching this new ball of fur play around and explore.

You know what the real problem with him is? He doesn't have a name! This little guy needs an awesome name to get him to fit in with the crew here. So far, my naming scheme has been Finnish words for dog names, and Bible names for the cats. Martha came with her name, and then my second cat was Lazarus. Laz went to live with some friends of mine, however, because he was needy and desperate for attention all the time. Since my friends have 6+ people living in the house, he gets gobs of attention over there, all the time, and I still get to visit him whenever I want.

I'm not sure if I want to continue the naming themes with this new guy, or just give him an awesome name that suits his funky, friendly, easy going, short legged self. Which is where you guys come in. Will you suggest a name for this new little guy? Be it a long mouthful of a name with a cute nickname to use in the mean time, or just the perfect one syllable name, I would love to hear your suggestions.

Koira's Birthday Day (and a Giveaway!)

I think Koira enjoyed her birthday today. For breakfast, she got some greek yogurt, and then a Jack toy filled with crumbled cookies in her crate.

After I got home from work, the real fun started. Short of going to the beach (and not getting there until an hour before dark), I thought Koira would have the most fun just going to the park. Before leaving, the dogs had a meal of venison, their first venison this year. Then, we headed off to the park to play. First, we set up and did her birthday "pupcake" at one of the picnic tables though.

I made the pupcakes this weekend. They are a blend of peanut butter, pumpkin, eggs, garabanzo bean flour, and a little cinnamon. Both dogs are crazy about them, and even Martha stole one and ate the entire thing while I had them sitting out to cool. You know something must be good if even the cat likes it!

Once the pupcakes were gone (don't worry, Pallo got one too), we went on our walk. Koira was all full of jazz and perhaps a little too bonkers. There was one woman who Koira body slammed three times, and I kept trying to say that we would walk faster and go ahead of her, but the woman wouldn't let us go! I did finally manage to get on ahead so that Koira would go play instead of fixating on the person's chuck-it.

We ended up finding a bunch of other friendly, playful dogs to romp with. Koira also did some serious stick chewing, of course. And Jason did some tug-of-war with her.

Koira did get a bit impatient about the stick being thrown a few times. She sure can be demanding sometimes. I'm just glad she is so mellow at home. I don't really care how loud and demanding she is at the park.

And even Pallo agreed to wear a birthday hat to help celebrate Koira's fifth birthday. I don't normally go all over the top for birthdays, and focus a lot more on Gotcha Days, but for some reason, 5 seems like a landmark of some kind, like she just turned 21 and can have her first drink or something.

Now for the fun part for all of you! Giveaway time.

Do you see those festive collars Pallo and Koira are wearing in the pictures from today? I don't really call them Christmas collars, because they can pretty much work all winter long. They are more of a holiday/winter collar. And one of you will get to win one! The particular designs worn by my dogs are just the ones I chose for them. I have a small selection of already made collars that the winner can choose from, or else a selection of partly completed collars that can be made to more custom collar lengths.
