Wordless Wednesday: Dogs in Cars

Okay, it isn't quite wordless. It is Wednesday though!

I've been seeing a lot of people posting and sharing some rather sensationalized memes about dogs in cars in the summer. As an active participant in dog sports, and someone who often travels with my dogs in all kinds of weather, I leave my dogs in the car sometimes. I believe 100% that this can be safe for the dogs, as long as common sense on the part of the owner is used.

This infographic, which I found on Facebook by Canine Lifestyle Academy, gives a much more reasonable approach to dogs in cars.

  1. Hmm interesting! I always see infographics and memes saying never ever ever leave a dog in the car! Thanks for sharing!

  2. I don't know if I could do that to my guys in the summer. I get hot in the car with the AC off after a minute. I do like the last one for bystanders - don't be confrontational. So true for so many things!

  3. I never leave my dog in the car - besides distress or anything that can happen, I know of folks who had their dogs stolen from a car. :(

  4. The only time I leave my dogs in the car is at an agility trial. I have large shade screens that cover the whole car but allow air to pass through. They are magneted down so they can't blow off. However, if it's going to be a hot day, I set my crates up inside the trial building. The dogs are actually much less stressed in the relative quiet of the car, but after a certain temp, it's just better to bring them inside.

  6. Good post! I have been seeing those memes floating around. I also leave my two in the car on occasion and follow the guidelines you posted. I have started worrying that I may come back to a broken window (even though I leave them rolled down).

  8. Great advice! I leave my dogs in the car but only when I don't expect to be gone long and only when the weather permits as there are not a lot of shady places to park where I live. We're pretty sparse on trees here.
Thanks for sharing this! It's much more informative than the memes.

  9. Thanks for sharing this. I try not to ever leave the dogs in the car, in the shade and windows down or not. I never want to take that chance. Well, that goes for the summer. When it's cooler out, I'll leave the dogs out in the car when I'm doing something real quick.

  11. Maybe you think that advising people to never leave a dog in the car is an over-the-top overreaction, but I disagree. Of course, I live in Arizona. Finding shade here is often next to impossible, and when the temperature is topping 100 degrees in the shade, shade is not helpful. And, unless the car windows are wide open, there is little or no air circulation inside the car. I never take Wrigs anywhere in the car unless he can accompany me at all times.

Even in a perfect world where you find a cool, shady spot to park, any passerby could antagonize the dog(s) or stick food or objects through the cracked window. I have also noticed that there are many people out there who have zero common sense and zero understanding that dogs cannot regulate their body temperatures the same way we do. Just my two cents, for what it's worth.
