My dog looks funny

I have come to the conclusion that my dog looks funny.

153. "Surprise!" -It's April Fool's Day! Take a picture that shows a surprise or prank today, or something that gives us a good laugh! - last day Apr 7

So many people compliment him, saying how nice he looks, how handsome.

I just find him funny looking. Sorry Pallo.

One thing that almost every person who comes into contact with Pallo asks me is "What breed is he?" I have my normal answer of "who knows?" or my slightly more creative answer of "Linn County Pound Special" which references the shelter I adopted him from. But, many people are not satisfied with this answer. They want to guess. Is he German Shepherd? Does he have daschund in him? What about some Corgi? Doesn't he look like that Swedish Vallhund that comes to the park sometimes? Maybe he has some Rottweiler in him, or Chow, or some Shar Pei?

152. "Lazy Saturday" - For most of us, Saturday is a day to relax and have fun. Show us something you and/or your dog did for fun today! - last day Apr 6

People expect me to be able to say something in response to these guesses. But, really, Pallo was a stray before he was picked up by animal control and adopted by me, so I have no more authority to guess about this than any other person familiar with dog breeds. In fact, I have started telling people who ask about his lineage at the park that I charge for asking the question so that I can pay for a breed DNA test. When a few of them said they might actually consider contributing to that, it made me wonder: Is it such a silly idea?

149. "Mellow Yellow" - Take a photo of your dog today with something yellow! Have fun with it! - last day Apr 3

On the prompting of a friend of mine, I have officially set up a ChipIn for Pallo's breed profile test. Yes, I feel silly setting it up for this when most of the ChipIns I see are for surgery money, or a rescue dog, or some other serious business. But, I figured, I might as well give people a chance to spend money on finding out my dog's breed, if that is what they really want to do. So here it is. Your chance to contribute to the cost of a $70 DNA profile test for Pallo.

The donation widget is both below and is on the sidebar of the blog. Feel free to ignore it if you think this is a silly thing to do. Feel free to contribute if you have a burning curiosity about what breeds make up the funny looking dog we love to call Pallo.

  3. I always think they're more interesting not knowing what they are. It's funny to hear the combinations that people come up with. All my dogs are mutts. My mothers dog we used to think she was a duck toller mix but now we have no clue. Scout we're pretty certain he's springer spaniel and basset hound then something else. And finally Kobi we actually think he might be pure bred as he looks exactly like australian red border collies which only happens as a recessive trait, but no one else seems to think that, everyone else is convinced he's border collie and duck toller. But what ever they are they are unique and one of a king because of it!

  4. That's hilarious! My friend's coworkers all chipped in to give her dog a DNA test- the results were beyond weird. I'm hoping Pallo is a chihuahua/mastiff. But that's just me...

  6. I hear you!! My Rose is, I think, a Beagle/German Shepherd cross.... But nobody truly knows her "breed"!! I am asked that question a lot, too!! Or so it seems!! How about simply saying "He's a mutt!!"? That is what I tell people, anyway!! Say it loud, say it proud, baby!! ;-}
    I cannot wait to find out what Pallo's mix is!! Seriously. I. Am. Stoked!! I have nothing against breed DNA tests, but for deeply personal reasons, I'd never go the distance to figuring out what Rose is!! Never. ;-]
    Ohhhh, Pallo is not "funny looking". He's BEAUTIFULLY UNIQUE!! No mixed breed dog is ever "funny looking".... Just "different"!! ;op
    And for your information, "Mystery Dogs" are the best kind of mixed breed!! ;)
    Good luck!! ;-D

  7. Pallo is absolutely adorable! People ask what type of dogs Maggie & Duke are all the time. My husband tells them that we don't know, they're mutts, satos or maybe part Dodge Dart!(Love George Carlin)
